The Government of Ghana has procured 12 million Light-Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs for free distribution nationwide in the next three months.

The activity forms part of the Ministry of Energy’s project dubbed the Energy Conservation and Demand-side Management (EDSM), to improve energy efficiency and manage demand to drive down the amount households pay for electricity.

The distribution of the bulbs will be carried out in the subsequent months by the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCE’S).

The Minister of Energy, Mr John Peter Amewu, disclosed this at a press briefing in Accra yesterday.

According to the Minister of Energy, John Peter Amewu, the nationwide Energy Conservation Exercise which is estimated to cost GHS200 million is part of efforts to promote a shift from the use of incandescent and CFL’s light to LED’s.

He added that, the implementation of EDSM, the government intends to encourage the efficient use of energy to address the increasing cost of electricity generation by targeting households and strategic institutions, “since their collective energy consumption accounts for over half of the national electricity demand”.

Mr Amewu explained that the distribution of the bulbs would be hinged on the size of the metropolises, municipalities and districts and would not factor in the political or religious affiliations of beneficiaries.

He said metropolitan assemblies would receive 50,000 of the bulbs, while municipal and district assemblies would receive 40,000 and 30,000 units, respectively.
