GHS 3.2 Billion Spent on Free SHS – Finance Minister

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta says the Akufo-Addo government has invested about Ghc 3.2 billion in the implementation of its flagship Free Senior High School programme.

He made this known on the floor of parliament on Thursday as he presented the 2020 Mid-year budget review.

According to the Finance Minister, some 1.2 million Ghanaian children have benefitted from this initiative by the government.

According to him, as a result, there has been a Ghc 2.2 million in savings to parents.

Meanwhile, the first batch of the free SHS programme, nicknamed ‘Akufo-Addo Graduates’ have on Monday, July 20, commenced their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Some 375,737 candidates from 976 schools are expected to sit for the exams at 796 centres throughout the country.

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Head of the National Office of West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mrs Wendy Enyonam Addy-Lamptey, said the number of examination personnel, including invigilators, had been increased due to the social distancing protocol, which had necessitated the use of additional classrooms.
