The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has released a statement that it will commence the Sub-National Immunization of children under the age of five today, September 11, 2019.

The GHS completed a routine immunization with polio in the Tamale Metropolis in the month of July and according to their report, the situation was assessed with cautious efforts. A team of experts from the GHS, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and other partners were deployed to support health teams in the Northern Region and the Tamale metropolis, in particular, to conduct detailed field investigations and identify the possible source of infection and determine the extent of geographical spread.

The Ministry therefore assured to be monitoring the situation with partners for solutions, which will include improved investigation across the country therefore the Sun-National Immunization exercise is a major boost to safeguard the health of future leaders.

The Immunization will take place today, September 11, 2019 to 14th September, 2019  and commence on the 25th to 28th September, 2019. Health Service workers will move from house to house to immunize children from birth to five years against polio and the vaccine has been confirmed as safe free and given as drops in the mouth.

The repeated doses of the polio vaccine were described as safe and able to give the child additional protection therefore the GHS directed parents to report any child under 15 years who develops sudden paralysis to the nearest health centre within 24 hours.
