GBC asks NMC to Stop Decision by Government to Cut Down its Channels

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has asked the National Media Commission (NMC) to stop the move by the government to reduce its six operating channels to three.

The Minister of Communications Ursula Owusu, had in a letter directed the GBC to “consolidate” its programs within two months in compliance to the directive to cut down its channels.

In response, the GBC says the move to cut down its channels will have negative consequences on the State Broadcater's operations, with the tendency of causing its collapse.

“Complying with the request of the Minister will mean GBC has to lose 3 of these channels. It will virtually mean that GBC will have to reduce as operations by half. This request will also impose serious budgetary and human resource challenges on the operations of the GBC and indeed, can collapse the Public Service Broadcaster” a letter from the GBC to NMC dated July 7, 2020 said.
