French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has announced on Tuesday afternoon that there will be no football action in the country until September.

As a result, the 2019/20 Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 seasons will not get back underway during summer as football events cannot comply with the minimum health conditions needed for its return.

"Events that bring together more than 5,000 people cannot take place before September," Philippe said.

"It will be possible, on sunny days, to practice individual sports activity outdoors, respecting the rules of social distancing.

"It will not be possible to practice sports in covered places, nor team or contact sports."

Ligue 1 was planning to resume training in May and be able to play behind closed doors in June and July.

The French League Assembly will meet to discuss how they will handle teams' promotions and relegations, as well as whether there will be 2019/20 champion and how this affects the next campaign.

This decision is in line with the measures adopted by the Dutch government, who banned any sporting event until September, leading to the cancellation of the Eredivisie season.
