Bruno Fernandes has disclosed the reason behind handing Marcus Rashford a penalty to register his name on the scoresheet on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils convincingly beat Istanbul Basaksehir by 4-1 at Old Trafford and the Portuguese had scored a brace but refused to attend to a penalty to register his first hat trick for the Red Devils after Rashford was fouled in the box.

Bruno handed the ball to the English forward and he made it three for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Speaking to BT Sports after the game, the player told that he did that to support his teammate who is one of the top scorers of the European League to build his confidence.

“Every player wants to do a hat-trick, you know, but after the game in the Premier League [against West Brom] I told Rashy the next one he will take so I remembered that,” Bruno said.

“And also because Rashy is one of the top scorers in the Champions League I think it will be important for him to keep going there and take on that confidence.

As I said, it doesn’t matter who takes the penalty, the most important thing is scoring and the team scores. When the team scores, I score.”

Fernandes since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in January has been directly involved in 34 goals in 35 appearances for Manchester United thus scoring 21 and providing 13 assists since his big-money transfer to England.

He has also reached 20 goals for the Red Devils in fewer games (35) than any other midfielder in the club’s history.

United top their Group with nine points trailed by PSG and RB Leipzig with six points each. The Red Devils will need a win against any of the two sides to progress to the next level of the competition.
