Pep Guardiola has lost three consecutive away league games for the first time in his managerial career after Che Adams scored his first in the Premier League and claimed a 1-0 victory for Southampton St Mary’s on Sunday, July 5, 2020.

Guardiola was looking to win his fifth game after the restart to keep a 100 percent record following a strong squad line up against the Saints.

Pep Guardiola made a raft of six changes to the side that beat Liverpool on Thursday;

Oleksandr Zinchenko, Joao Cancelo, Fernandinho, Bernardo Silva, David Silva, and Riyad Mahrez replacing Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy, Rodrigo, Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne.

Jack Stephens was back from suspension to replace Jannik Vestergaard in central defense, while Che Adams got a rare start up front in place of Shane Long. Will Smallbone dropped to the bench as Stuart Armstrong returned to the starting XI.

Manchester City started the game with their dominance but Southampton gave then a good run, chased them for balls, and put them under intense pressure to commit individual errors.

The only goal was recorded when Oleksandr Zinchenko came into midfield and was robbed by Stuart Armstrong who laid the ball off to Adams. He looked up, spotted Ederson off his line, and lifted the ball nonchalantly over his head and into the net to score his first goal for Southampton in his 30th appearance.

City pushed forward but were thwarted by Alex McCarthy in the Southampton goal, saving from Raheem Sterling and David Silva in quick succession.

They missed a host of chances to level with Fernandinho striking the post as Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and his two center-backs Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek produced inspired performances to preserve their slender lead.

Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden came in for Mahrez and Sterling but the intensity provided was heatedly handled by the Southampton defense.

Southampton nearly added a second on the counter but Stuart Armstrong could only shoot at Ederson.

City’s third successive away defeat keeps second on 66 points. Southampton leapfrog Crystal Palace into 13th with 43 points.
