Frank Lampard’s Chelsea have sealed their first home win of the season after clinging their first three points from Brighton Hove Albion at the Stamford Bridge of Saturday afternoon.

N'Golo Kante was absent for Chelsea’s squad as Ross Barkley took his place in midfield with Mason Mount playing a deeper role behind the recalled Pedro, who replace benched Meteo Kovacic.

Marcos Alonso returned for a second league start of the season with Emerson missing with injury. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James were named among the subs after their game time in midweek.

Brighton made only a change from their goalless draw at Newcastle last weekend. Pascal Gross and Aaron Mooy flanked Neal Maupay in a narrow three up front, but behind them Yves Bissouma replaced Davy Propper - out of the squad altogether.

Real zip in the Chelsea play as they dominated possession inside the Brighton half. Nice play from Abraham in the midfield led to Mount being found just outside the box. He stumbled with Dunk, put pressure on him and won a corner. Mount’s corner from the left reached an unmarked Jorginho on the edge but he shanked his effort off the far post in the earlier minutes.

Tammy Abraham and Mount combined upfront to produce an effective attack upfront but Brighton defence protect the ball and easily clear the chance from the yard. Willian changed things up, bursted inside off the left and shot from 25 yards once he got half a yard of space, but Webster tracked his effort and slided in on the edge of the box to clear it to safety.

Chelsea missed again in the 39-minute when Pedro found himself one-on-one with Ryan, on the left, and smacked the ball straight at him on his weaker foot allowing him to palm it away from danger.

Lampard’s youngsters were given a penalty five minutes into the second half. Brighton tried to possess the ball around their own box but a heavy touch from Webster gave Mount a sniff, he nipped in and was caught by the defender as he went through. VAR was consulted for a confirmation. Jorginho lovely took the kick towards the left hand corner to flummox stable Ryan in post.

Chelsea scored the second through Willian in the 76_minute. The Brazilian received Hudson-Odoi’s half way line ball. He got precious little to admit to aim but once he got into the box, he powered n effort at the near post which took a deflection off Burn and wrong footed Ryan.

Abraham almost made it three as he took Mount’s pass. He stumbled but stayed on his feet under pressure from Burn and with only Ryann to beat; he tried to lift the ball over when he perhaps should have looked inside the far post.

The game ended on behalf of the Blues in a hard fought from Lampard’s men to seal their first home win.
