Manchester City have secured a quarterfinal place in the English League Cup after a 3-1 win over Southampton at the Etihad on Tuesday night.

Pep Guardiola named a stronger City line up with Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus both starting in attack. Nine changes overall was effected for City, with Tommy Doyle making his professional debut in midfield and Eric Garcia and Phil Foden also starting, as Adrian Bernabe and Ian Poveda-Ocampo were also on the bench.

Ralph Hasenhuttl shuffled his pack, bringing in six new faces from their 9-0 mauling against Leicester on Friday, including Alex McCarthy in goal and recalled for Sofiane Boufal and Shane Long.

Bernardo's lovely floated cross from Doyle's short corner was nodded in by Otamendi, who beat Romeu in the air to score the opener for the Champions.

City took absolute control of possession, controlled the game and created a lot of chances. Southampton sat back and made it difficult for the Citizens to convert opportunities after finding it difficult to surge forward for goal. The Saints found it hard to hold unto the ball for 10 seconds without been dispossessed.

Aguero in the 38-minute finished off a lovely team goal with some great tempo in the hosts' passing. From midfield out to Bernardo Silva on the right, to Walker on the overlap, to Aguero in the six-yard box before finding the back of the net.

Southampton started to play a little bit more upfront in the second half before City scored a third 56-minute. Mahrez's shot from the edge of the box took a big deflection off a defender and Aguero was straight onto it, reacting behind a static Stephens to poke beyond McCarthy from close range.

The Saints warmed into the game with warning towards City anytime they pitched forward. A Ward-Prowse corner was delivered to the back post where Stephens met it to beat Angelino in the air for a consolation.

Angelino went off with what looked like his hamstring for John Stones to take his place as City’s defensive woes continued.
