EC to refund filing fees of disqualified Presidential aspirants

The Electoral Commission says it will refund the ¢100,000 filing fees of presidential aspirants who were disqualified in the run-up to the 2020 elections.

The EC Chairperson, Mrs Jean Meansa said, some persons were disqualified from joining the presidential race after the commission procedurally scrutinized the nomination forms of the aspirants to ensure that each candidate satisfied all the requirements outlined by law to qualify as a candidate.

Head of Public Relations for the Commission Sylvia Annor said some aspirants failed to meet the requirements of the Commission.

“In this situation where the aspirants were not able to sail through, we have no other alternative than to give their monies back to them but for those who are able to sail through, their monies will be kept,” she said on Joy FM’s Top Story.

The five: Kwesi Addae Odike, Kofi Koranteng, Marricke Kofi Gane, Kwasi Busumbru and Nana Agyenim Boateng were disqualified because of what the EC described as inconsistencies with their filing forms.

Their cases bothered on allegations of forgery of signatures and the manufacturing of endorsees which will be forwarded to the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further probe.

Sylvia Annor explained that the Commission had duly engaged the affected aspirants on the issues raised before the decision was taken against them.

She added, however, that the Commission is yet to officially write to inform them about their disqualification, despite the public announcement.
