While trying to praise President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the introduction of the Free SHS policy in a recent interview, Diana Asamoah claimed that "All students in Senior High Schools benefiting from the policy would have become armed robbers by now if they were not in school".

“Every youth must not miss the chance of joining the NPP because the party has their future in mind….Without free SHS, all of the students in school would’ve become armed robbers”

Her statement was immediately tackled by a fellow New Patriotic Party (NPP) loyalist, Great Ampong, on United Television with actress Nana Ama McBrown. He pointed out that the gospel artiste was committing the grave error of fallacy of hasty generalization by grouping them all together.

Great Amoong explained that it would be false to claim that all the students enjoying the free SHS by President Nana Akuffo Addo would have turned armed robbers without the initiative. He stated that at most, only a handful of the students would have resorted to theft.

Not only are his comments logical, they are backed by scientific research also.

The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling (NPP) Boahen Nana Obiri, had earlier given out statistics in this regard. According to him, research conducted by the NPP revealed that MOST people (and not ALL) in jail had low or no level of education.

“With the free Senior High School, if implemented for at least about four or five years, and proceed to the implementation of Free Tertiary, in the next ten or fifteen years if we still have free SHS and Free Tertiary, armed robbery cases will reduce”

“In a research, we conducted as a minister of state at the Interior Ministry at the Nsawam Prisons, people who were jailed for murder cases and high crime cases, most of them had low or no level of education,” Nana Obri Boahen told Nana Kwadwo Jantuah the host of the shows.

“It would be very difficult not to say it can’t happen; that a university product will attack someone with a knife to snatch a mobile phone. It doesn’t happen likely”.

Even though Diana Asamoah was shown the error in her statement by her fellow NPP member, the gospel artiste refused to back down and admit her wrong. Still strongly claiming that she believes in her statement.

The words said by Diana Asamoah, who is a card bearing member of the NPP and currently a tourism ambassador, has gone on to show how blind loyalty can cause prominent individuals to make unrealistic comments.
