Former Communications Minister Edward Omane Boamah has called on the Akufo-Addo led government to implement an immediate lockdown to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.

In a statement Tuesday, Dr. Omane Boamah said the Akufo-Addo administration is already lagging behind in the fight against the pandemic.

“You have waited for the vertical transmission to translate into horizontal transmission,” he said, adding “let us not wait any longer!”

The former minister’s call amplifies pleas from Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC), directed at the government to lockdown the country before the situation goes out hand.

NMIMR which is at the forefront of testing for covid-19 cases, called for a lockdown on human movement as a proactive solution to the escalation of the community spread of the COVID-19 in Ghana. The Institute also recommended the mass testing of people for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as the surest way to detect cases early.

In cognizance to earlier calls for a nationwide lockdown, Omane Boamah noted that “I pray and hope your government will listen in good faith and act urgently,”

Meanwhile, health officials have confirmed two Covid-19 fatalities in Ghana with 25 cases outstanding.
