Government has debunked reports from some section of the media indicating that schools are going to soon reopen, looking at the trajectory of covid-19 responses from authorities.

Ghana’s Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said no such pronouncement has been made on the re-opening of schools.

The Minister said in contrast to the inaccurate reports, consultations are rather being made on what it will take to re-open schools.

"Government is not saying that schools are to re-open soon, what we are saying is that consultations on what it takes to re-open schools is what we are currently engaged in" he noted

Pre-tertiary Education Unions had earlier warned against any plans by the Ghana Education Service to reopen schools.

The groups insisted that conditions are not rife for the safe reopening of schools given that the new coronavirus infection spread remains “very exponential” and “still very much horizontal” in the country.

Some critics also argued that lifting the ban on public gatherings to allow schools reopen will be unsafe, as some behaviours of students and their negligence to rules might cause a spike in covid-19 cases.

In response to these ensuing protests, the Information Minister said it was okay for people to be apprehensive.

He however mentioned that such apprehensions should be channelled towards finding a viable solution for the easing of restrictions on public gatherings.
