Covid-19: Ghana Suspends Consular Services in UK, Ireland

Ghana’s High Commission in the United Kingdom and Ireland, has temporarily suspended issuance of visas to Ghana as part of precautionary measures to manage the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

The directive takes effect today, Wednesday, March 18, 2020, 

As part of guidelines in carrying out the directive, Ghana’s High noted that, “Visa applicants who have paid the visa fee and submitted their applications to the high commission as at 16th March, 2020 may either request for refund of the visa fee, or wait for their visas to be issued and mailed to them by the commission”

The commission added that, applicants who have been given appointments, but are yet to submit their applications are advised not to come to High Commission until further notice, as all appointments are cancelled.

Ghana had earlier announced the closure of embassies in Italy and Spain where the virus has claimed about 3,000 lives in the two countries alone.

Also, in response to the recent developments of Covid-19 in the country, the Government of Ghana has issued a travel advisory discouraging all travels to the country

According to the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, all persons except Ghanaians, who have within the last 14 days, visited countries with at least 200 cases of Covid-19 will not be permitted into the country.

He added that, persons allowed to enter the country will be required to mandatorily self-quarantine for 14 days. Persons who are unable to satisfactorily do so, will be quarantined by the state.
