Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr Oheneba Danso, has expressed fear in the challenge the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) will pose to the country’s health system.

He bemoaned that, Ghana might face some problems managing the outbreak as countries with relatively better healthcare systems have been rocked by the Covid-19

“Even Europe is currently challenged; our system is certainly going to be challenged. Last Monday we met and I can tell you a lot of measures have been put in place but our health system is overstretched because there is a limit as to how far we can go,” he noted.

Delivering a solidarity message at the 4th Annual Review Meeting of the Tamale Teaching Hospital in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital, Dr Danso advised Ghanaians to take ongoing campaign messages seriously and become advocates against the disease.

He said the coronavirus has come to add to the many challenges bedeviling teaching hospitals across the country and urged everyone, especially those with smartphones to take seriously, preventive messages from WHO and health experts.

“We must equip ourselves with the knowledge immediately and everybody must know the dos and the dons,” Dr Danso added.

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in an earlier address to the nation on Wednesday, 11th March, 2020 disclosed that a $100 million will be set aside to support the country’s preparedness plan towards coronavirus.

This amount, according to President Akufo-Addo, “is to fund the expansion of infrastructure, purchase of materials and equipment, and public education”.

As part precautionary measures, the president said “I have, as at yesterday, ordered a suspension of all international travels by public officials. Except for critical assignments, which will have to be authorised by the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, all public officials are to remain within the jurisdiction, until further notice.

"Video conferencing facilities and other technological tools are to be utilised, whenever possible, for international engagements” he added.
