At a press conference yesterday at the Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service in Kumasi, the Regional Police Commander spoke that the Police Service is on alert especially as the festive season draw near to help reduce unlawful activities to make Kumasi a safer place.

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Ampofo Duku has updated the public on reported crimes and revealed the necessary approach the security service require to combat crime in the Ashanti Region.

At a press conference yesterday at the Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service in Kumasi, the Regional Police Commander spoke that the Police Service is on alert especially as the festive season draws near to help reduce unlawful activities to make Kumasi a safer place.

He begun by commending the Overlord of the Land, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for curbing chieftaincy and land disputes, which were principal among cases passed unto the Police to decipher. One notable area of achievement of Asantehene has been his ability to use traditional diplomacy in resolving and brokering peace in many instances across the country especially in his Asante Kingdom.

 

 

“We all agree that because he is the Overlord in this Region, it is his duty to resolve chieftaincy and land matters. Indeed, Ashanti Region is very peaceful when it comes to such issues and we are grateful to have a leader of his ability,” he said.

He pleaded to the Asante King to keep on maintaining peace for the welfare of Asanteman.

According to the DCOP, the Police arrested armed men who attacked passengers on the Obuasi Dunkwa highway after receiving a report. He narrated that the Police were involved in the exchange of fire which led to the arrest of one after getting hurt as the other two escaped. He lauded the general public for assisting them to make arrest of the other two who are in Police custody ready to face trials.

Robbers who attacked a resident at Ohwimase and run off with a stolen pump action gun were also informed of haven been locked up after Police captured them for attacking another woman for her treasure.

One out of three people arrested at Oforikrom was also narrated of receiving medical attention at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital under Police Guard.

35 suspects were also revealed to be in the hands of the Police after the Police embarked on sweep on Sunday at Kumasi Bantama. The account of the Ashanti Regional Police Commander stated that an identification parade would be conducted on the 16th and 17th of October, 2019 for evidence. He urged the public to aid them in the parade to put recognized criminals out for good.

“One of them called Osei Acheampong has already been identified. When the news of our swoop was made known, a man walked in and testified that he attacked him for his phone some time ago. He is in our custody,” he added.

He further wanrned Car rental services in Ghana specifically in Accra and Tema to be cautious of whom they lease their asset to due to the rampant report the Police have received on such cases.

“Car snatching has also been one of the challenges we are facing in Kumasi. People hire cars from Tema and Accra for Kumasi. On arrival, they ally with their accomplices and attack the driver for the car. We are pleading on the Car rental companies to require certain particulars especially the identity of the person in order to recognise such people when they do not return with the asset again,” he added.
