ASEPA Files Criminal Complaint against Hawa Koomson; Demands her Immediate Arrest

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has petitioned the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to prosecute MP for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson, for ‘engaging in gun violence’ at a registration centre.

Earlier Monday, officials of the Electoral Commission closed down the Step to Christ registration center in Kasoa after ‘armed thugs’ reportedly stormed the premises and fired gunshots.

Per eyewitnesses account, the men numbering at least 15 arrived at the centre with the MP (Hawa Koomson) around 8 am and tried to sack some prospective voters.

Subsequently, Hawa Koomson, in narrating the incident, explained that, she was rather attacked by some men from the NDC at the centre. Therefore, she fired a warning shot in self-defence. She however debunked reports of her men firing any gun.

But ASEPA has in a criminal complaint against Madam Hawa Koomson given an entirely different account of what happened yesterday.

According to ASEPA, Madam Hawa Koomson upon arrival at the registration centre ordered her men to move motorbikes parked at the premises.

The group noted that, owners of the motorbikes rushed to move the bikes themselves, which caused Hawa Koomson’s men to open pepper spray on them.

ASEPA continued: “Madam Hawa Koomson then ordered her men to set the bikes ablaze which they obliged

“As the bike were being burnt, others who had parked their bikes in nearby areas also started to run to save their bikes from being burnt by Hawa Koomson’s men.

“In the midst of the chaos, Madam Hawa Komsoon then [allegedly] ordered [her] men to open fire into the crowd’

They added that luckily, no one was hit by the stray bullets.

In light of this, ASEPPA has called for the immediate arrest of Madam Hawa Koomson and ‘arraigned before court in accordance with the Laws of the Republic of Ghana”

They also demanded compensation packages for owners of the motorbikes that were burnt.
