The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Monday registered for the new Voters' Identity Card at the Manhyia polling station.

 

 

The Electoral Commission on June 30, 2020, began its new voter’s register system across Ghana in over 33,000 polling stations with each cluster consisting of five registration. The process is in its final week and so far, more than 15 million Ghanaians are reported to have acquired the new registration card.

 

 

Otumfuo was with his wife, Lady Julia as they underwent various health protocols. It took them less than 15 minutes to obtain their card to make them eligible voters.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah discussed that the Asantehene is pleased with the exercise and the new approach adopted by the Electoral Commission for the new  Register.

 

 

“The King is very satisfied that people are observing the various rules outlined by the electoral commission,” he said.

“He as a great leader obeyed the enhanced hygiene directives by washing his hands and applying the sanitizer, the temperature gun was used on him just like any other person before the process.

 

 

“He is a humble leader and this is a message to us all that we must be obliged to the measures put in place for our safety not just during the registration exercise, but in all laws in the country.

On his assessment of the exercise, Hon Simon Osei Mensah spoke fulfillment on how people have comported themselves in the region to get their names written. He applauded the Electoral Commission for the improved technical attitude to get the new register done.

 

 

“The registration process has been very peaceful so far. There was no technical distraction and the COVID protocols were adhered to. Otumfuo and wife, Lady Julia procession took less than 15 minutes to finish. It is so everywhere in the Ashanti Region. Apart from the Asawase and Ejura incidents, everything is as expected.

 

 

He finally called on Ghanaians who have not yet acquired their registration cards to do so than wait until the final hours.

“I am entreating those who have not registered to do their best and be part of the process in the final days. Do not wait until the mob up since it might be for selected areas. It's best to do it now as a Ghanaian to be able to take part in the voting.”
