Akufo-Addo is engaging in ‘Sakawa’ sod-cutting for votes – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has described President Akufo-Addo sod-cutting ceremonies as deceptive and intended to sway voters.

The former president called on chiefs to critically scrutinise the government’s promises and sod-cutting exercises, as the country gears towards its general elections.

Mr. Mahama wants chiefs to ask during sod-cutting ceremonies if such projects have been captured by government in the 2020 budget.

Speaking at the NDC’s town hall meeting in Kumasi, he urged chiefs to ask if such projects have been sent to Parliament and loan arrangements made for such projects or not.

He has described such sod-cutting ceremonies as fraudulent.

“Lately, the President and his Vice have been going round to cut the sod for various projects without having contractors on site. They only bring the equipment to the site just for the sod-cutting ceremony and return them when the President leaves. So it is just for deception. It is Sakawa. It is 419″ he said, as quoted by citinewsroom.

Meanwhile, the Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, had earlier accused the NDC of going on a deceptive promising spree, to sway voters ahead of the elections.

She said the opposition National Democratic Congress manifesto was packaged lies.

The Ablekuma West legislator said the NDC’s manifesto offered no hope, as it’s only filled with things electorates wanted to hear in spite of its unfeasibility.

“They claim they say what people want to hear, but it is a mixture of lies and truth. In the run-up to the elections, the NDC goes to the various constituencies and packaged this.

“They package what people want to hear, hoping that it will be sweet enough in their ears,”

She suggested that the NDC had a history of failing to fulfil its manifesto promises.
