Pep Guardiola says Sergio Aguero will undergo knee surgery and does not know when the striker will be back in action.

The prolific striker limped out of Manchester City’s 5-0 demolition of Burnley on Monday at the Etihad. The Spanish disclosed in his pre-match interview that the length at which the player will be off the pitch would depend on the success of the surgery.

“Tomorrow we will do a surgery in Barcelona with Dr. Cugat,” Pep said. “After that, we don't know when he will come back and join us.

“After the surgery [we will know more]. He will tell us with more accuracy when he can come back.”

With the Argentine out of City’s line up, Gabriel Jesus remains the out and out striker to replace the void left hitherto; Ikay Gundogan could be used in such a role since Jesus cannot be featured in City’s remaining games.

Manchester City will play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday and Raheem Sterling is expected to trade position when there is a deficiency in City's goal-scoring.

"We don’t have any doubts about Gabriel," he said.

"Only doubt we have is that not one single player with the preparation we had can play every game.

"No one player can play 90 minutes every three days. Raheem can play in this position, even Gundogan can.

"We have different options. Not a striker, but we have other options."
