"Abandoned Projects Would Have Already Been Completed If We Were Still In Power" – Mahama

Former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has bemoaned the deplorable state of projects commenced by erstwhile governments under the Akufo-Addo administration.

He asserted that many projects that were commenced in the interest of the general public have been abandoned by the current government.

“All the roads I remember we were working on, have come to standstill. All the E-blocks, Community day schools have come to a standstill.

All the electricity projects, we were extending power to communities have come to a standstill… All the hospital we were building have also come to a standstill…” he noted addressing an audience in Yendi, Northern Region.

According to the former president, these “abandoned projects would have been completed and opened to the public” if his government was still in power.

The Akufo-Addo government has come under fire following its promise to construct 88 hospitals in the country this year. These critics say, the government would be wasting state resources in constructing these new medical facilities while hospital projects started by erstwhile governments have been abandoned.

The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh for instance called on the government to focus on completing abandoned hospital projects of erstwhile governments instead of starting new ones.

Ghana’s Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has however refuted claims of the opposition, opining that, hospital projects started by the erstwhile Mahama administration have not been abandoned by the current government but are rather being worked on.

“The unfinished hospitals largely remain work in progress and we will give an update on where we picked them from and how far we have come with them. There are some that we have finished and opened up, some are near completion and some have gotten into financial and contracting difficulties because of some issues associated with them. We will also give dates on when those in progress will be finished. It is to make the point that, some may be uncompleted still but they are not abandoned, it is work in progress, it will be finished by a particular time” he said.

But, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahama commenting on the performance of the current government said, Ghana will see rapid progress in development only when the NDC is in power.

“When you look at the history of Ghana, it is only when the NDC is in power that you see rapid progress in development, peace and stability in the country”
