3 Ghanaians Killed by Covid-19 in Europe – Foreign Minister

Three Ghanaians have been confirmed dead as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak in Italy and Denmark.

The Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway who disclosed this to journalists outside parliament on Wednesday [March 18] said two of fatalities were recorded in Italy.

She, however, says the situation is not critical and won't require the evacuation of Ghanaians from countries purportedly hard-hit by the disease. 

Madam Ayorkor Botchway is advising Ghanaians abroad to be careful and adhere to the precautionary measures spelt out health officials and WHO.Ghana yesterday [March 17, 2020] confirmed another case of COVID-19, bringing the total number of recorded cases to seven.

The statement from the Ghana Health Service added that 350 contacts have been traced to the 7 confirmed cases and are being followed up,"

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research have tested 143 suspected cases for COVID-19 as of March 17, 2020.

In response to the recent developments of Covid-19, the Government of Ghana has issued a travel advisory discouraging all travels to the country

According to the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, all persons except Ghanaians, who have within the last 14 days, visited countries with at least 200 cases of Covid-19 will not be permitted into the country.

He added that, persons allowed to enter the country will be required to mandatorily self-quarantine for 14 days. Persons who are unable to satisfactorily do so, will be quarantined by the state.

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has already issued a directive to temporarily suspend all foreign travels for all public officials.

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has also set aside $100 million to support Ghana’s preparedness plan towards coronavirus.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the amount “is to fund expansion of infrastructure, purchase of materials and equipment, and public education.”
