250 Ghanaian Evacuees from UAE expected Home Today – Foreign Affairs Minister

250 Ghanaians are expected to arrive in Accra today, June 16, 2020, from the United Arab Emirates, UAE.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Madam Ayorkor Botchway who disclosed this at press briefing today explained that the persons being evacuated from the UAE were unfortunately living in horrible conditions after possibly losing their jobs.

“The people in Dubai were part of those brought back and another group are on their way as we speak. They are people who were found loitering because of the circumstances of how they live. In such places as Dubai, many of them worked as artisans, maidservants, or domestic workers. They live in dormitories and work in hotels as well and once your employers lose their job, they kick you out and those in such countries were kicked out so they were living anyhow,” she disclosed.

 She noted that so far, a total of 856 stranded Ghanaians have been evacuated back home.

Another batch of more than 600 persons are expected to be evacuated by the end of the month.

The minister said a batch of four hundred persons and another one hundred and 95 are also expected to be evacuated from Lebanon and Dubai.

She said government is committed to ensuring that all those who have made pleas to return home are assisted.

Ayorkor Botchway however expressed worry the cost of hotel for quarantine and says the cost is a huge concern to the COVID-19 response team.
